~ Marin’s Only Green Certified Salon Introduces new Hair and Skin Products ~
San Rafael, CA.—Renaissance House of Beauty today announced that it will offer new hair care and skin care products from companies that share the salon’s commitment to client health and the environment. In March, the salon became Marin County’s first and only “green” certified hair and beauty salon, with its certification by the Florida Association of Beauty Professionals (FAB Pro). We believe that certification is good for our salon and our industry, because it lets consumers know where we stand,” says Martine Langsam, founder and owner of the salon. “As part of that philosophy, we’re bringing in product lines from companies that are also taking the high road regarding their ingredients and production processes.”
The new hair care line comes from Innersense Organic Beauty, a California-based company known for moving the hair care industry in a green direction. “Our first priority is always to offer high-quality products that are good for our customers’ hair, skin and general health,” Langsam explains. “Innersense delivers the quality we require with the environmental approach we were looking for.” She notes that the company offers chemical-free products created using certified organic ingredients, and that Innersense has also signed a number of industry compacts regarding organic ingredients, product safety, truth in labeling, and fair trade.
Renaissance conducted a parallel search for a new skin care line, and chose products from Phyt’s, a company with a 35-year heritage of focusing on natural products free from synthetics, preservatives, and animal testing. Langsam began researching Phyt’s in part due to its membership in Cosmébio, a European professional association promoting ecological and organic cosmetics. “We found only a few skin care companies adhering to any kind of external environmental standard,” Langsam says, “so we tested their products for quality and how well they would fit our own customer requirements.” Phyt’s was the unanimous choice of everyone on the staff.
Renaissance House of Beauty conducted the search for new skin and hair care products as part of its “Green Salon” policy. This written policy commits the salon to using natural products whenever possible, including products without parabens, preservatives, artificial ingredients or colors. The policy also covers a host of other daily activities, including waste reduction and recycling. As part of its comprehensive recycling program, for example, the salon recycles clients’ hair-care tools and donates hair clippings to Matter of Trust (www.matteroftrust.org) for weaving into oil spill recovery mats.
“Having an explicit green policy is a small change with a big impact,” Langsam says. “Everyone at Renaissance understands that good intentions aren’t enough anymore. We have to change the way our industry works, and that starts right here in our own salon.”
